i decided to make a higher poly version and then whilst doing so i thought why not knock down the mid poly to low poly then i have 3 version which makes other processes simpler.
for example i could put the high poly into zbrush or mudbox and sculpt some really high res features like wrinkles and hairs and then export that as a normal map for the low poly mesh. if that made any sense to you aha.
also i can now use this generic base mesh for all my future female models.
